"Seeing comes before words", according to John Berger. The child observes and perceives before it can speak. As such, you could say that drawing is the language of children: it is the expression of a world to which adults have no access. For children, the adult world is a partly incomprehensible matrix, while adults often long for the seemingly direct gaze of the child. The meaning of such childlike creative expressions is not always clear.
In 2003, the Municipal Academy for Fine Arts in Sint-Niklaas hosted the exhibition Tekeningen van kinderen met naam. The exhibition featured youthful work by Philippe Vandenberg, Wim Delvoye, Luc Tuymans, Guillaume Bijl, Louis Minard, Jan Cox, Roger Raveel, GAL, Walter Swennen, Joseph Plateau and Carl De Keyzer, among others. When Liesbeth Feys, one of the initiators of this publication, showed the wondrously beautiful 2003 booklet to her young students at the art academy, she was asked, "And where are the girls' drawings?" This question planted the seed for part two of Tekeningen van kinderen met naam.
A small book with a collection of 25 children drawings by a selection of contemporary female artists.
The result of a collaboration between Liesbeth Feys & Pleasure Island.
A text by Stefanie Van Rompaey was written for this publication, also translated to French.
